There are powered USB docking boxes for SATA drives. I use one and have not had any problems reading up to 3TB drives (mind you USB is rather slow for large drives.)

For recovery of `not quite missing' data I like to use Easeus Data Recovery Wizard Finds almost everything on the drive, although sometimes it has to rename the files with a number such as 001.jpg 002.jpg etc. but you get your pictures back and it's worth the effort of having to rename them as long as you got them back.
