As with most European languages, in English, "man" is used to refer to a group of males or a group of mixed gender, with "women" being reserved for exclusively female groups. Same thing with "he" and "she".

Although I appreciate the motives behind the "gender-neutral" group and the occasional author who alternates "he" and "she" to refer to random individuals it puts me off. I read "she" as referring to a woman and always pause when the context isn't right. "Mankind" is fine. I've never actually met a woman who objected to it.

This reminds me of the Christians who feel that occasions like Christmas should be secularized so as not to offend non-Christians. I've never met a North American Jew who thought this was an issue. Arguing about such things trivializes prejudice and does more harm than good.
