      My guess? Tools->Folder Options->File Types by wwill 2011-08-29 14:41:59
found .lnk and made the file extension association to MSIE.

Simple, and derned near as stupid a thing as you can imagine to do when you don't know what a .lnk file is.

If you can get any of the file display programs running (start->run->cmd maybe) you might be able to unscrew the inscrutable that way. Isn't there a file browse section under the File menu item in MSIE that will open the windows explorer dialogue? Might be able to get to the folder options/file types segment that way. Could be worth a look for prophylaxis....

Never had this one happen to me. Yet. I'm sure eventually one of the more adventurous fools in my circle of "Fix my computer, pretty please?!?" fools will manage to do this.

So, which section of the registry did you need to merge to get it correct again? Or did you just do the whole thing?
