"federal" charges and "state" or "local" charges. What may not get you charged at one level, will at another.
Overall, I wonder what the justification the Feds are giving is for filing the charges. I would like to see the actual report in question that the feds are basing this charge off of before going too much further in speculation. The two things that pop into my head immediately is that someone is trying to use this to "make an example" of someone for some reason OR there is something else in the report that they saw that is not in the linked articles.
No matter who you have on your side at the State and Local level, If it goes to Federal court he will still be out time, and a *lot* of money to fight it....even if he is found innocent later on. With the way things like this have gone in the past, it will at the least go to grand jury/judicial review, he will need to appear for that, and then they will decide how to proceed from there. I *seriously* doubt that any amount of petitioning of a federal official will change that..., I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt it.
