part of what's involved in maintaining the force field is siphoning off attempts to radiate significant amounts of energy into, or out of, the field. Thus, an attempt to raise the pressure within the field will eventually translate into an attempt to radiate more energy out of the field than can be handled by the force field generator; in the same way, repeated blasts from outside will eventually require more energy to be removed at the field wall than the generator can handle.
