Wow. What a difference a few years makes. by ChuckAB 2011-04-02 20:14:04
Bought my first computer (Apple ][+) in 1982 for $2200US. Using the chart here that translates to somewhere about $5000 in today's dollars.
This included the computer, color 13" monitor, single 143KB floppy drive, and an additional 16KB memory for a total of 64KB.

I've seen bundles that include the computer and monitor run about $600 today. Using the same chart, that translates to about $265 in 1982.

Let's see if I can pull some specs out of my hat:
  • Processor speed: 1.1MHz 8-bit 6502 vs 2.something GHz 64-bit multi-core x86
  • Memory: 64KB vs 4GB or more
  • Monitor: 13" composite color monitor (480i) vs 19" digital monitor (1080p)
  • Storage: 143KB floppies vs tera-byte hard drives and multi-gigabyte removable storage.

What a difference.
