...but last time I used Keyence sensors the brown wire determined whether the the sensor switched high or low.

Remember: it's not a digital signal that goes 0V or 24V. It's either switched or open.

So if you take the brown wire to ground, the switch closes to ground. You can figure out what happens if you take it to positive.
