Aircraft have a maximum rate of descent, generally determined by the maximum airspeed (Vne, for Velocity: never exceed). That can be very very fast, up to 30000 feet per minute in a Boeing 737, but you simply don't subject an aircraft to tremendous stresses when it's just lost a piece of its skin. I am sure the pilots descended as quickly as practical and safe, but the oxygen masks gave them time to take it relatively easy.
