I remember I had this issue for some time on my old notebook with
a Hardy installation when I switched from VirtualBox to using KVM.

Some file or directory had a permissions goof. Once I had resolved
that, it worked smoothly.

With the new notebook I did a fresh installation using Lucid Lynx.
KVM and virt-manager worked out of the box.
