Regarding Great Lakes Lore and pirates. The challenge is not so much the geographic setting as the temporal one. "Arrrrrrrrrrrr" pirates adventuring in modern day. That's the challenge. Given the right period, I wouldn't let Geography stand in the way, as overcoming that obstacle doesn't require much of a stretch of imagination.
