I'm gearing up to run a game with a near by hadji 2011-02-16 23:14:11
present-day setting. One of the players asks me (in at least partial jest, I'm sure), "can I play a pirate?"

Knowing him, he means this, I'm sure, in the context of the pop-culture caricature of classic pirates. Not like Somalian pirates.

When I'm asked a question like this . . . as a GM . . . saying "yes" seems non-sensical. On the other hand, a flat out "no" is boring. So I gave him my usual answer to questions like this.

"If you can come up with a convincing way to make it work, then yes." Mind you, by "convincing", I mean "convincing to me".

He says he's taking this as a challenge. I told him I'll be good to my word. So we'll see . . .
