The best* plans tend to be restrictive in what phones they allow, but I'm already highly limited in what I'm willing to get.
The N900 tempting (and with the right plan potentially cheaper than my Treo 680 w/AT&T), but it's not clear that T-mobile would give access to their prepaid monthly or pay as you go plans. They also seem to be hiding their "normal" monthly plans, so I can't compare them with AT&T directly. (Can it be used with CDMA providers, or is this GSM only?) It's also annoying that Nokia will never release a successor. I was hoping to see a Mi-Go MeeGo phone.
Platinumtel offers some very nice plans, but are restricted to phones that are: substantially inferior to my Treo 680, Droids without a hard keyboard, or potentially both.
Cricket seems... restrictive. "Unlimited," monthly plans with many subtle usage (and device?) restrictions and it is not clear that after taxes and fees they would be much (if any) cheaper than my current AT&T plan. Also, their pay as you go looks like it would get very expensive if you use the phone a little bit but every day.
At least the screen issues have solved themselves, so I'm (probably) not under a strict time limit. This also means that I probably won't need to rush out and buy an unlocked Treo 755p on ebay. As for other phones, variants of the Palm Pre and Pixi both seem like possibilities, as does the HTC G2. In any case, I need to find some stores (or friends) for all of the phones that aren't Treos, and fondle/test them out a bit. Other suggestions are welcome, especially if they give me a way to better narrow down phones (so many droids...) and service providers. I have not looked at Verizon or Sprint in detail, and have been ignoring AT&T since I doubt I can get a cheaper plan with my current usage.
*Cheapest that get me useful amounts of texting and bandwidth (as light as my needs are there). Almost everything gives me enough talk time. Also, the more I look at the fine print, the less cheap these seem. Hitting the right balance of talk/text/data with a monthly plan is non-trivial. |
