It seems to me that one general area that really needs to be reigned in, that would garner the most savings, are the entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare. As I understand it, those represent a huge part of the Federal budget. However, good luck getting anyone to touch those items with any length of stick. It'd be political suicide (and with potentially serious social consequences, even).

So, instead, I suspect they'll just cut and eliminate a bunch of smaller programs that don't have the political support to raise any real outcry to stop them. It'll save some money, perhaps, but ultimately amount to a hill of beans compared to the overall spending that'll still happen. :P

That's my cynical view, anyway.
