If the top cross tube goes straight across from the seat to the handlebars section (the "neck" or "Head tube"), then it's considered a traditional boy's bike. If that cross tube goes from the neck towards the bottom of the seat tube, then it's for a girl. The dropped version was to accommodate a woman's dress so as to not risk her accidentally showing her naughty bits of undergarments. The straight-across top tube was for a man's trousers which didn't need such modesty requirements. This history lesson brought to you by the letters S, E, X, and the numbers 1 8 0 0. =-)p
