just eliminated #1 said I didn't have one on hand, not that I didn't have one... aka: I shut the fileserver down (it's got a 650W PSU in it) and leaned it over my desktop and hooked it's 24 and 8 pin connectors to the problem motherboard. same symptom. (very much so in the don't try this at home kids category) looks like I need to RMA this piece of bleep motherboard.
