I pass in a username and password (submitted when the user logs in to the website). The web page hashes the password, then passes the username and hashed password to a stored procedure, which attempts to query the database for matches. If successful (i.e. if the hash of the password matches what's stored in the database), the stored procedure returns the user's information (name, title, etc.); otherwise it returns what amounts to an empty struct. In either case I do overwrite the string submitted by the user. I don't store it anywhere.
