I'd say that on your scale, a response of 6 is reasonable and would earn no scorn from me. However, a response of 3 or 4 would be much more effective in resolving the situation to your favor. Ask your boss for a formal performance review, where you will ask for a raise to the level being offered. Be prepared to toot your own horn, explaining all the ways in which you meet or exceed the qualifications of the candidate being sought.
