I'd say that on your scale, a response of 6 is reasonable and would earn no scorn from me. However, a response of 3 or 4 would be much more effective in resolving the situation to your favor. Ask your boss for a formal performance review, where you will ask for a raise to the level being offered. Be prepared to toot your own horn, explaining all the ways in which you meet or exceed the qualifications of the candidate being sought.

By the way, if 10 is a grizzly bear subjected to injustice, what number would describe Mama Grizzly when she sees her cub being attacked?
