that they have a job helps their self esteem and can also help them get another (and possibly better paying job) just because they have been employed and have not just sat on their butt and collected money from the government. When I was hiring people one of the first things I looked for on a resume were long gaps in employment. During the interview I would normally ask what happened during that time. the answers would range from "I just needed a break from working" to "I was in a severe car wreck and was in the hospital in a body cast for 4 months and another 6 months of Physical Therapy." Those answers can give you a lot of insight into how a person thinks and how they will respond under stress. More than once I did not hire a person when they responded along the lines of "I just needed a break" ...mainly because they might just "need a break" right before a deadline...
