Windows Mobile doesn't quite count. The interface for anything pre Windows Phone 7 sucks and there was no app store (Windows Marketplace) before Apple introduced theirs. Android was still emerging and didn't have the big push it does now. I'm also not sure if their app store (Android Market) was there at first either. Installation methods involving connecting to a PC don't quite compete with the app stores as far as the mainstream market is concerned.
