Why do marketing people try to play engineer? by AndyA2010-09-28 09:14:51
There are people who insist on being in charge by twixt 2010-09-28 11:26:33
of what they are not good at.

In my experience, Marketeers and Beancounters are especially notorious for this - and at levels that often drive businesses into the ground. (It is also interesting to note how many Politicians display the characteristics of *both* types.)

I have observed that both Marketeers and Beancounters tend to have a rather tenuous hold on reality. Both professions attract people who enjoy living in fantasy worlds where situations develop as those people would *like* them to develop - and what actually happens in reality is an annoying distraction. (ie: rose coloured glasses disease)

IMO, people who display these qualities should not be put in charge of anything that requires adhering to the Laws of Physics or dealing with the consequences of underfunding. These tasks required a dedicated focus on *what actually happens* and an ability to focus on finding solutions that *work in the real world*.

My life experience is also full of situations where marketeers and beancounters have displayed a woeful misunderstanding of the concept of accountability. IMO, it is interesting to note that *advice* is plentiful - but if that advice does not play out as the fantasy intends, not much is said or done about the consequences of following said advice.

IOW, the concept of "bad advice" coming out of their mouths seems not to apply in the fantasy worlds of Marketeers, Beancounters (or Politicians). Quelle surprise!
