All sorts of way. by AndyA 2010-09-28 11:02:30
The situation we have in one groups is that they outsourced a lot of product design. The end result works fine and if that product was to never get touched again it would have worked out well.

But then when you have weird interaction issues between two different products the knowledge is no longer all in one place. The code is written to the specification without an eye to future enhancements making it harder to add new features.
And when we want to experiment with new ideas that won't make it to market for a couple of years there is no way we are going to explain the details to an outside company in a different country until all the patents are sorted out. Which means we end up very resource limited for the R side of R&D.

Outsourcing may be cheaper on the balance books. That doesn't always make it cheaper once you allow for all of the consequences.
