spoke Norwegian and Polish until he started school. Norwegian because that's what was spoken at home. Polish because that's what the closest neighbors spoke. (Dad's family lived on a farm a fair piece away from anything resembling a village or town. It may not have been the boondocks, but you could see them from there.)

He said English came along pretty quickly. My own son spoke no English when we adopted him at three. He was doing OK by kindergarten (strange word choices sometimes -- teachers said he knew some fifth-grade words and didn't understand some pre-K words.)
