How much do you know about the details of - say - Swiss culture? As far as you know (or, seeing as how you seem to be more interested in this than most, and therefore might know more than most, as far as those around you know), how differentiated is Swiss culture? Is Switzerland a monoculture?

And then, of course, it is good story telling technique to not let tangential details that are irrelevant to the story intrude. Which means that an alien culture could very well look like a monoculture from what we are told in a story. This doesn't mean that it is, simply that it appears that way.
