All of my favourite Trek episodes deal with the deeper exploration of a culture (The Defector, Sins of the Father, Duet, Indiscretion, Jetrel, Shadows of P'Jem, The Aenar etc.). To my mind it's akin to throwing out the laws of physics just because you have to break one for FTL travel. Just because there is not the time to explore the nuances of every individual culture does not mean that every single race need be turned into, or left as, a cardboard cutout.
