Probably something to do with rendering. I would look to see what libraries both apps rely on. I don't know enough about the VM to be able to troubleshoot it; but, I don't know if the problems are related. A problem in the boot sequence is likely to be an issue with hardware detection and initialization. The only thing that might connect them is if there is an issue between virual machine and the mouse driver which could be triggered by the apps. If it worked before, then you might try rolling back any updates related to the mouse driver stack from KDE to those libraries down to the kernel.
