When user programs segfault, you get error messages. If there is something wrong with Virtual Box, you would likely be experiencing segfaulting in the kernel. Segfaults in the kernel usually lead to complete system crashes -- error messages somewhat unlikely.

Do you notice that the programs you are using close when you receive segfault messages or does it seem like something in the background (that you don't see) is crashing?
