And you're not as awkward as you think you are. You think so because you spend all your time observing you -- other people *don't* because they spend all their time observing themselves. 99% of the time other people are so wrapped up in themselves they won't even notice if you're awkward.
Finding out others may sometimes perceive you as awkward can cause a major loss of social self-confidence and bring on severe self-consciousness, and it sounds like *that* is your main problem right now, not the Asperger's.
As someone who struggles with similar issues, I have three suggestions for you:
- Play MindHabits. Daily. It may seem silly, but it really does start to make a difference after a while. When you train your brain to focus on the friendly faces, you become more able to perceive the social cues that indicate someone likes you and wants to be around you, and when you can recognize that in someone, you don't have to doubt yourself around them.
- If your self-consciousness spirals into full-blown social anxiety (you can't interact socially because you're so busy worrying about how others will perceive you), don't be afraid to try medication for it. When I'm in a situation like that, I take a Klonopin -- it helps, a lot. It won't totally take away the worrying, but it can push the self-consciousness into the background where it's a lot easier to ignore...
- Stick around here. Instead of going away, try posting more... you connect with people by interacting frequently. There are several UFies who have Asperger's, and they fit in fine here. You can too. |
