US elections are expensive, in order to get elected you need to be well connected with people who have a lot of money. In order to know those people the chances are that the candidates themselves will be wealthy.

Maybe their salaries should be tied to the national surplus. If the government is running at a deficit then they have to pay to stay in office (unless they are bankrupt in which case they can keep the job and claim the minimum wage).
They say they are in office out of a desire to serve their country, if that's true then they should be happy to spend their own money to help fix the economy. ;-)
