I'm a pretty strong pro-life supporter, particularly when it comes to late-term abortions where the unborn is pretty clearly viable. I was never a supporter of George Tiller and thought that, as a doctor in his specific field, he stretched the boundaries of human decency, not by preserving his services for the women who had real, tangible needs for them, but for those who simply wanted a last-ditch opportunity to end their pregnancy, regardless of how late or of how viable the unborn child was. I really *can* understand the desperation that women in these situations face...I have daughters and would not like to see any of them have to face such choices. But at some point, the life of the child ought to have at least *some* consideration. I say all this, not to ignite a flamewar about abortion. These are my opinions. Others have their own and are welcome to them. I'm just saying that I didn't like Dr. Tiller. I felt he blurred that line between medical necessity and convenience, and living in Kansas like I do, I suspect that he obscured proper documentation of what he actually did or didn't do in his clinic.
All that said...there's *still* no justification for the violence that Roeder did, in shooting Tiller. There's no justification for the hatred that the sick, angry people do in the name of a cause they don't really understand. Abortion is a complex issue, with lots of gray obscured by the shouts of people who only choose to see the blackest and whitest of the black and white ideologies they cling to.
I don't hold my opinions on abortion on the basis of my religious faith. There's some pretty basic science involved that convinces me more than anything else of what I believe on the subject. But I know that many pro-life supporters hold their faith as the centerpiece on their beliefs on abortion. I find it odd (and disgusting, actually) that someone like Roeder (or his apologists) would use some twist of faith to justify the murder of Dr. Tiller. Or of ANY of the violence/hatred/harassment that some of them use.
The Bible is pretty clear on the "judge not lest ye be judged" thing. I know that the Catholic Church (or many of the priests I've talked to) don't believe in the death penalty because they feel it's up to God to judge...and perhaps turn around...the sins of even the worst sinner. That's what gets me about the murder of Tiller. Even if Roeder felt Tiller was an evil sinner, what greater crime could he have inflicted on Tiller against God than to take away Tiller's chance for redemption? Y'know? I mean, from a strictly relgious and philosophical standpoint, isn't Roeder casting himself as God by sending (in his estimation) Tiller to Hell (apologies for the analogy here) without even the slightest chance for redemption? Wouldn't that be taking a soul out of God's hands and guidance and throwing it away?
As I said in my earlier post, Roeder's justifications are self-serving to his insane hatred. It disgusts me. |
