as some people might shoot their foot....or someone elses....
This is especially an issue if you are at an indoor range with a concrete floor... because bullets can "bounce" or ricochet.... and that is not a good thing....

I would suggest moving the firearm to where you can see the chamber while keeping your face away from the firearm and THEN inspect the chamber visually and then if you are sure the slide or other "action" is not going to close on your fingers. stick your finger in the chamber to physically verify it to be empty.

A chamber flag (the little plastic part that sticks out of the action) is a visual indicator that the firearm is "unloaded" and that the chamber is clear at that moment in time... but I would STILL not stick anything in front of the barrel that you want to keep....

The best way to think about it is to imagine that there is a laser coming out the end of the barrel and it will cut off anything that it crosses. I have seen instructors with a plastic training gun attach a 3' dowel to the end of the gun to make this point. You would be amazed how many times some people get hit by that dowel....
