Invoke Uficle: Repairing Windows XP by jdelphiki 2010-03-01 18:50:05
Our home computer has carped out: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, BSOD that shows up when it tries to start up even in safe mode.

I ran memtest86+ on it and the memory came out fine. So I figured I'd need to try to repair.

Since I can't get beyond the BSOD to get to where Windows has started, I'm trying to rebuild from the XP disk.

Unfortunately, the XP disk I have isn't the one for that computer. The computer is a years-old Dell and though I'm sure the disks that came with it are *somewhere* in the house, I don't know where that would be.

The disk I'm using is for a version of XP that I own, but not the one that matches the computer. It's also not one that I still have the CD key for. (keeps getting better and better, huh?) The original jewel case for it is nowhere to be found and was likely destroyed when my son went on a "breaking things" bent a few years ago, seeing as how most of the stuff in that desk got broken at that time. *sighs*

So the recovery ran to the part where I'm getting prompted for the CD key. And it's stuck there.

I read about how I can break into a command prompt during that process...which is handy for changing passwords (except that every time I move the mouse, the User Manager crashes). But I can get a command prompt. But I'm not sure if that'll help.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get around this particular problem?

Thanks!
