I recently saw a show where LEO's were demonstrating non-lethal weapons, and one of them was a air-soft-based automatic weapon.

They had 2 version - one that fired little rubber balls for person-control and one that fired little aluminium ball (though, not sure how that would NOT be lethal if aimed at a person) they said was for things like shattering windshields/glass doors, etc.
