Speaking of OptiPlex GX280 (and GX270) by owh 2010-01-04 22:59:11
(inspired by RetiQlum2's P4 misadventure with the bent pins, earlier today)

My sweetheart (let's call her owhSO) has been using a GX270 with a 2.4 GHz P4 for the past couple of years. In an attempt to get her a significant (if not earth-shattering) performance on a budget, I just acquired a GX280 with a 500GB SATA disk.

The non-destructive migration path between the 270 and the 280 appears elusive:

270 = 2 IDE channels plus one SATA, primary drive can either be IDE or SATA (currently a 200 GB IDE drive, running XP SP3 French)

280 = 1 IDE channel plus one SATA (came with a clean install of XP SP3 English on 500G SATA)

270 = PS/2 ports for keyboard & mouse, plus a total of 8 USB ports (2 in front)

280 = PS/2 ports are gone, USB ports are same as in 270

I also suspect significant chipset differences (motherboard and video) between them.

A simple image restore of the 270's IDE drive on the 280's drive failed (no keyboard or mouse detected, probably because USB drivers not yet loaded). A repair install from the appropriate XP CD (Dell's own restore disk with SP3) failed to produce significantly better results.

My current plan: restore the 270's image onto the SATA drive and attempt to boot that drive in the 270. THEN attempt to install GX280 chipset software while still on the 270, then reboot in the 280.

Any opinions as to whether I have a snowball's chance in h4 to port her configuration between those machines without being forced into a clean install?

I realize this is late in the day (according to board time), so I will most likely re-post tomorrow, with cross-links to keep everything together.

Thanks in advance for any advice or commiseration... ;-)
