Aiii!! Java posse requested by dennismv 2010-01-04 17:52:35
So I am to teach a programming course in Java. The purpose is to have an in-depth treatment of the language.
My background is mixed, but mostly I haven't used Java as a primary language myself. However, I've been recently using Java with Eclipse at wrok. I may have already been tainted! but not really.

Any requests from current hardcore Java programmers and developers as to what dogmas, tools, concepts and so on you would like to be taught to newcomers to Java ? Things that are current in the industry or just anything you'd think the new comers to the language are to have? How much emphasis is to be put on GUI elements, how much on non-gui concepts?

Or does it matter at all ?

For concrete things, I have options to use Textpad, Eclipse of MS Visual J++ as my editor.
Then I can put my focus on mind-numbing GUI concepts like Swing and applets, or mind-numbing inheritance, value passing and so on concepts.
