The early four-function calculators didn't have enough registers for more than two operands, so they'd always evaluate intermediate results before proceeding, not only when you pressed the equals key, but also when you pressed a function key to continue the expression. The cheaper four-function calculators you find today sometimes still have that limitation. Heck, even Windows Calc in standard mode does this. (In scientific mode it behaves properly.)
