Rabbits eat cecotropes, which are different from the regular stool.
Rabbits are hind-gut fermenters -- the rabbit cecum functions similarly to the bovine rumen, and ingesting the cecotropes is an essential part of the disestive process, just like a cow chewing and reingesting its cud.
A rabbit will not leave uneaten cecotropes unless it is seriously ill -- most rabbits eat them as they're coming out, so even people who own pet rabbits almost never see cecotropes.
The rabbit turds you find in the woods have already been through the system twice, and look quite different from cecotropes. (Cecotrope vs poop - compare them side by side) Don't eat rabbit turds, they have little nutritional value and wild rabbits can carry several nasty parasites. |
