domain. Some people failed to renew their copyrights back when copyright existed for a fixed term and then could be renewed for a second, fixed term.

That's the idea behind Google Books: some of those books are public domain but nobody knows which ones. That, and the idea that Google has the singular right to index every printed book and that such indexing should be opt-out like robots.txt, except it's more of a DMCA takedown letter.
