Some topics are explicitly taboo in some cultures while in others they are openly discussed. In others again they may well be a source of humour.

In the end it all comes down to tolerance. Each individual society/culture tolerates or doesn't tolerate various subjects to a greater or lesser extent. Those that tolerate the most tend to be the freest.
