There are other aspects of producing a good or service well beyond those considerations:
* How big of a mess do you make? (pollution, barren soil, using all of an area's water, noise, fumes/smoke, etc)
* Can people who NEED this (if it's a need, like health care) afford it?
* Are you serving the customer well, or trying to do little, charge a lot, and/or defraud them?
* Are you serving the employees well, or using them up, burning them out, and discarding them like a dirty rag, while offering no vacation, sick days, health benefits, family leave, etc?
Some of these questions will be irrelevant to stockholders, who only want their money. But stockholders are NOT the world.
And all these things are why some regulation is needed. |
