I sometimes think professors and other instructors do that to try to force a kind of Darwinian atmosphere. It's crap.

You will study your a3 off and you will get an A.

If you just made a noise of disbelief or amusement, read that sentence again. You will note a distinct lack of smiley faces or anything else to blunt the seriousness. It is simply the truth, and you will do it if you discard fear, feelings of doom, comic effect, or other mind-tricks meant to soften a blow that your mind might expect.

You will study your a3 off and you will get an A.

Simple, unvarnished truth. Now, get to it.
