The US is western medicine in that it is evidence based.

US culture, in this context in particular it's culture of viewing everything non-ideal as a medical condition to be treated, is not however western culture or part of western medicine.

So the people you speak to are correct, the US medical system is western medicine.
But it is only one particular implementation of western medicine with it's own cultural framework and context added on top of it.

Or to put it another way, western medicine develops the pills and tells you that they have the claimed effect. It doesn't necessarily say one way or the other whether you should or need to take them, that is up to the doctor and the patient and is influenced by the culture they are in.
