"western medicine" is geared towards alleviating symptoms and quick fixes. This is where we get the "Doc, just give me a pill to make me better" philosophy that is very prevalent in our society. Couple that with the *some* Doctors not really caring how the patient got sick and just with them getting better and you miss out on something that Eastern medicine and homeopathy/natural herbal medicine people do... treat the **person** as a whole both mind AND body.
With my parents running a vitamin and health shop they see/hear it all the time where the doctors have them atking one med for the illness, another to offset a side effect of the main med, a third for the side effect of the second, a fourth to .... you get the idea....
When we went through my Dad's meds after finding out that the heart med he was on is known to cause heart muscle damage... we found out that of the 14 pills he was taking, he only needed 6 of them... the rest were to counter side effects of the others....
When we spoke to the Doc's at the VA about it they seemed *shocked* that we even cared about it.... Their answer was basically "They are just pills, take em."
... guess what... with much fussing we got him on different meds that were better for him AND did not have as many side effects.
I am not saying one is better than the other, I am saying that the general western approach is akin to "take this magic pill and poof you are better...now get out of my office.." and they do not care about the *person*, just curing the immediate disease with a magic pill....
Sometimes, what is making the person sick and needing a doctor can be solved with treating the body AND mind and not just a pill. |
