| How to kill a pesky Paladin? |

The background: My rogue, Kevdak, is Neutral Evil. He despises the Paladin in the group, and wants him dead. It just so happens that Kevdak got kidnapped by Zhentil Keep a while back, and he was given an invisible circlet that allows communication with Zhentil Keep and was gifted(?) with half-vampirism, just without the blood-lust. He was also hired to steal an intelligent and extremely powerful artifact from the group after we stole it from a dragon.
The recent past: The dragon is dead. Kevdak pocketed the artifact and claimed it wasn't in the chest it was supposed to be in. Then some gigantic iron golem attacked us. Kevdak decided to wield the artifact (a powerful magical weapon) to try and kill the golem. He was promptly possessed by the artifact. After several wisdom and intelligence checks, Kevdak overcame the possession and slipped the artifact into a carrying case found by the Paladin. He got a lecture from the Paladin. Kevdak didn't like the lecture.
The present: We passed through a magical gateway in the dragon's cave and found an abandoned house in a city all the way across the country from where we started. We've all gained at least two levels, and now the talk is of what to do next. Kevdak has gotten marching orders from Zhentil Keep: Steal the artifact and bring it to us, and kill the Paladin if you can.
The immediate future: Kevdak has decided to stick with Zhentil Keep -- they seem wealthier and more powerful than our group, and, well, Kevdak likes to look out for himself and only himself. So Kevdak has decided to kill the Paladin. Here is his equipment and the thoughts he's had so far:
Shortsword +3, unholy, flaming burst
Dagger +2, unholy, speed
Boots of speed
Several armor-enhancing rings and other trinkets
Portable hole
Bag of Holding I
Light warhorse wearing horseshoes of speed
So my thoughts were to set a trap for the Paladin: Place the portable hole on the ground about 30 feet away from the house (we're all sleeping on the main floor in the front room), steal the artifact, attempt to cut the Paladin's throat while he's sleeping, then run to a pre-picked hiding place about 20 feet from the portable hole with a clear view of the oncoming paladin (who likely won't die from one dagger-thrust, even with the damage from the unholy aura; he's level 8). When the Paladin is within 10 feet of the portable hole, throw the bag of holding into the portable hole, causing all material within ten feet of the portable hole (including the Paladin, naturally) to be sucked into another dimension/world/plane.
Anyone got any better thoughts? He has about 10,000 gold left from the massive treasure we received for killing the dragon and his minions (another story in and of itself, and it wasn't supposed to happen), so if there's anything Kevdak might need for his purposes, he's got that much to spend. |
