A SATA drive is a SATA drive, whether it's a 2.5 inch or 3.5 inch form factor - connectors should be the same. I've got a 2.5" WD SATA drive in one of my mules right now as dead-storage for some stuff.

Is there a brand/model# on the drive? Might be something funkey you need to do to get a desktop controller to acknowledge the drive exists - had one oddball integrated desktop SATA controller that fought with a several SATA drives I had, until I found out I had to manually limit the drive to SATA/150 speed rather than let it try to detect things itself.
