The first clue that early astronomers had about geocentricity being wrong was the observed path of the stars through the heavens. If you track the path of the stars, assuming a geocentric univers, you quickly run into a problem - some stars to 'backwards' relative to the earth for part of the year. Those bent on geocentricity worked out complex star charts with retrograde motion to try and explain this. The much simpler version, with a heliocentric solar system, explained the same phenomenon without all the crazy attempts. Of course, your geocentric acquaintance has probably never studied the sky...
