Repost: UFicle input wanted: computer noise levels by sgrunt 2009-10-26 02:23:36
(Original post)

Since rebuilding my computer's cooling recently, I have come to the conclusion that my computer is kind of loud, probably around 35-40 dBA. Seeing as the box is in my bedroom it can get a little annoying at times.

I think it is more important that my computer be kept cool than that it be quiet - it is a quad core system and those put out a lot of heat, which is why I redid the cooling in the first place. But I would like to be able to sleep in relative peace from time to time without resorting to ear plugs on a continuing basis...

To sum up the scenario:
  • The case is an old Lian Li (got it as a birthday present several years ago back before modular case designs were commonplace; it's been great). The front of the case has two 80mm fans, and the rear has one 80mm fan. Apart from the following, that's all the case has for fans.
  • The CPU cooler is a Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus. Mounted on it are two 120mm fans.
  • The power supply is an OCZ 500W something or other (it's not something I would have considered normally, but they were out of my most likely choices at the time and sold it to me at a very good price instead; also I haven't had a modular power supply before). I don't think that the one (140mm) fan in it is contributing to the noise levels substantially.
  • The video card is something based on the GeForce 8600 GTS (my dad gave this to me after upgrading to something else). I don't do anything graphics-intensive, but the fan on it might still be an issue.
So, I want your opinions as to what I can do to quiet the computer down. I'd prefer something on a relatively modest budget, though in the future I'd love to do something exorbitant like water-cooling everything. :p

Some input as to how loud your own computers are wouldn't hurt either; it might reassure me that what I have isn't really all that bothersome...
