In the olden days (e.g. early 90's) GPS coverage wasn't so good. In some areas you simply had to collect for a long time, there was no alternative.
There are tools that will tell you for a given location when the best time is to go and collect data and how good the coverage will be, these days with 30+ SVs in orbit the difference is mainly academic unless you are at the bottom of a big pit but it used to be critical.
