Even on a flat plain, straight GPS isn't going to be so accurate that you have to hold your ten foot pole with antenna atop (3m for the SI types) absolutely vertical to avoid messing up the results... so I'm betting the "memorial" they put up was also a datum mark for future work on that site.

I get entirely too much into Time Team. Although I'm looking forward to the two episodes of the REAL Time Team my local PBS affiliate is showing tonight. Check your listings, you might have them too...
