Specifically the Hero's Journey portion of "The Hero with A Thousand Faces". One of the archetypes of myth is that the hero must pass through death or the underworld before reaching his goal. The second is that an individual male or female is incomplete alone, and must bond with one of the opposite gender to reach fulfillment.

See Star Wars, Sleeping Beauty, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, various Native American legends, Orpheus and Eurydice and many others for more examples of these motifs.
