he is asking them for support. If they see ANY reason they should not give it to him, or at least should not ask those they influence to give it to him, and do anyway, that is their own doing.

I don't really have a problem with him asking for support. I would have a problem if he showed up during a service himself, and tried to use it as a platform to pass on his message, or specifically sent someone to do so for him. But asking the religious leader for support is very different.
